Environmental Technology

MOL Group is developing technologies that will contribute to environmental protection and energy conservation and will serve as global warming countermeasures. Representative technologies include energy efficient ships with reduced wind resistance, ships designed for reduced risk of oil spills and a propeller boss cap fin system, (PBCF).

PBCF: PBCF efficiently recovers energy loss in the vortex generated behind a ships propeller. This is a MOL proprietary technology that uses the same number of fins attached to the rear end of the propeller shaft. The PBCF system provides a 4% to 5% energy saving and reduces emissions of CO2, NOx, and SOx. As of the end of April 2008, we had received 1400 orders (cumulative) for use of this technology since the PBCF system was developed in 1987.

Optimal vessel operation support system: This system monitors the operational status of vessels and utilizes the latest ocean meteorological data to determine optimum routes in terms of safe operation, on-time departure / arrival and minimal fuel consumption, taking into consideration the performance characteristics of specific vessel types.

Optimum trim calculation system: Optimisation of draft and trim is becoming popular as a technique for reducing ships CO2 emissions. Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations, tank tests and full-scale vessel tests have been conducted with a focus on optimal trim to cut fuel consumption, and trim optimisation has been shown to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 4%.

Low friction hull paint: Minute concaves in the paint film trap the water, smooth the rough surface and reduce frictional resistance. MOL’s performance analysis has confirmed a more than 3% improvement in energy conservation, although differences exist between different vessel types.
